Dead Hedges

We have been experimenting on our parks with the introduction of 'Dead Hedges' a great way to use old branches and tree cuttings to form a natural boundary which is great for wildlife and the environment. Such structures reduce the amount of garden debris which needs disposal and in turn creates habitat for wildlife!

What is a dead hedge?

In the natural world, fallen branches, logs, and leaves are bustling with activity – they play a crucial role in the environment, just like the blossoms, foliage, and fresh sprouts.

A Dead Hedge is a tall framework made of woody stems interlaced with vertical supports. These supports are typically the stronger branches harvested from trees or shrubs.

They create a complex network and an ideal sanctuary for birds like Blackbirds, Robins and Wrens to build nests and search for food.

A dead hedge is a feature that can be developed gradually, over time, with each pruning session or garden cleanup. By incorporating a fallen hedge into your garden, you can maintain a neat space while also supporting local wildlife.
